It’s Time To Feel Supported!

Did you know that 8 out of 10 people wear the wrong-sized bra? Are you one of them? Your breasts change just like the rest of your body for a variety of reasons, from going through puberty, changes in age and weight or even pregnancy and menopause. Let's not forget that breasts rarely match in size or shape, they are sisters, not twins! This blog will explain how to find a bra that fits you properly and how Pretty Polly lingerie can help you feel supported.

types of bras

Whilst it might seem easy to measure your bra size, finding a bra that fits correctly isn’t as simple. There are other factors you need to consider such as breast shape and how the bra actually fits when it’s on. The easiest way to work out if a bra actually fits is when it’s on you, there are 5 simple tests you can do to help you decide

  • The band should sit flush against your breastbone. The band of your bra should support most of your bust, not the straps! Therefore, it’s key to have a band that fits firmly but is still comfortable and a band that doesn’t ride up at the back, if it does it’s a sign that the band is too big. Similarly, if the band is too tight you’ll have the all too familiar undesired bulge, this means you should try a band that’s a little big bigger.

  • The underwire should go around each breast, comfortably. Just because you’ve chosen an underwire bra doesn’t mean it needs to be uncomfortable; if an underwire is uncomfortable your bra doesn’t fit right. You need to get this right to benefit from its extra support. Ideally, the wire needs to be completely flat across your ribcage and reach your armpits, so it doesn’t squeeze your delicate tissue and cause damage.

  • The middle should be flat against your chest. The gore, the middle part of the bra should lie completely flat against your chest, and not be sticking out or cutting into you. This might seem like a small detail, but it’s a vital part of getting a bra to fit you correctly. If it’s digging into you the bra is too small, and if it’s loose then it’s too big.

  • The cups should be filled with no overspill. Perhaps one of the most obvious signs that your bra doesn’t fit is when you’re spilling out of the cups. A correctly fitting bra will fully hold both breasts comfortably with no overspill, and without feeling like it’s tight or cutting in. Similarly, there shouldn’t be any gaps or wrinkles, this means the cup is too big. In padded bras, this will be a gape and in non-padded this will be wrinkling.

  • Straps shouldn’t be digging in or loose. Another key component of a bra, straps have a large misconception. Many think that they give the bra support when really the band does most of that. Regardless of this, the straps should feel comfortable and not dig in, or alternatively fall down or feel loose. If the straps aren’t feeling right and the rest of the bra is fitting nicely, it might be worth trying a different style to suit your boobs.
